- W90791609 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of phytochrome-controlled acetylcholine (ACh) synthesis at the endoplasmic reticulum. Jaffe demonstrated that ACh, the neurotransmitter of the animal central nervous system, was present in bean roots and that its titre was increased by irradiation with red light and decreased by far-red light. The chapter presents a summary of the differences in endogenous ACh between red- and far-red light-irradiated tissues of various plants. In both etiolated mung bean root tips and a callus derived from moss, assayed by gas-liquid chromatography, the ACh titre of red light-irradiated tissue is much higher than that of tissue irradiated with far-red light or kept in the dark. To explain the phytochrome-mediated changes in the endogenous level of ACh, it is necessary to know if the synthetic and metabolic apparatus for ACh exists in plants. Such a system is known to exist in neurons of the central nervous system of animals. ACh is synthesized in animals by the enzyme cholineacetyl transferase (ChAT) from acetyl coenzyme A plus choline." @default.
