- W91016845 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the isoenzymes and compartmentation in the regulation of phenolic metabolism. Primary and phenolic metabolism is linked by the well-known enzyme phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), which converts l -phenylalanine into cinnamic acid. This enzyme has been shown to be present in different cellular fractions with other enzymes involved in phenolic metabolism. Such organelles are involved in the synthesis of coumarins. In some plants, chloroplasts can also shorten the lateral three carbon chain of cinnamic acids to benzoic acids. In nonphotosynthetic organs, PAL is associated in mitochondria or microbody-type organelles with enzymes involved in the synthesis of C6-C1 units from C6-C3 compounds. The microsomal fraction, which may contain PAL activity and the tightly membrane bound cinnamate k-hydroxylase, gives rise to the cinnamic acids of the general phenylpropanoid pathway. Such data suggest a different subcellular location of PAL activity depending on the specific expression of phenolic metabolism." @default.
