- W91090930 abstract "This chapter presents an exploration of the possibility that students can be taught to be more effective learners, independent of specific subject matter, and to relate this concept to current research results in several related areas of cognitive psychology. At present, all sectors of society are calling for some sort of educational reform. One common criticism of current educational practices involves the lack of effective instructional procedures to facilitate student learning. Fundamental to this problem is the almost universal assumption that students will learn simply because they are asked or told to learn, or because they are supplied with one of the increasing number of technological devices or supports available. Educational research has contributed little to the knowledge of how to facilitate a learner's ability to develop and utilize effective and efficient learning strategies or intellectual skills. To that end educational researchers and practitioners have begun to place greater emphasis on creating techniques to foster a learner's development of cognitive skills and strategies. The conceptual bases and methodological procedures used to study cognitive elaboration skills and strategies derive from an extension of classical verbal-learning research traditions." @default.
