- W91104939 abstract "Catabolism and extravasation of I/sup 131/-labeled serum albumin into the gut lumen were studied in rabbits exposed to whole-body doses of 275 to 1600 r gamma radiation. For albumin catabolism and distribution, four different reaction patterns were seen, depending upon the dose. An effect noted at all the dose levels, however, was an elevated rate of albumin breakdown and a pathologically increased gastrointestinal leakage, which was correlated with the dose. With a low dose this was the only disturbance recorded. With a medium dose (about LD/sub 50/) there was, in addition, a more rapid initial distribution of albumin before gastrointestinal leakage reached full extent. This was interpreted as capillary damage, possibly of a general type. At a higher radiation dose (exceeding LD/sub 50/, two different types of reaction were noted. At the highest dose level (1600 r) there was a marked extravascular distribution of albumin and the animals died after five days, nearly 50% of the retained activity in the body appearing in the gastrointestinal wall and, chiefly, in the contents of the stomach and intestine. In animals that received 1200 r there was initially the same increased extravasular distribution, but on the last days preceding death a high urinarymore » excretion of radioactivity occurred simultaneously with a distinct reduction of extraviscularly distributed albumin. When the animals died after eight days, 20% of the retained activity appeared in the digestive tract. (BBB)« less" @default.
