- W91506831 abstract "This chapter discusses the positive potential for combined heat and power (CHP)/ district heating (DH) in Belfast, Edinburgh, and Tyneside. The technical feasibility of CHP associated with DH has been demonstrated over a number of years in cities across Europe. So far, the technology has not been applied in the United Kingdom. In the year 1979, the Marshall Committee, having examined the likely application of CHP/DH in the United Kingdom, recommended the selection of a lead city for the purposes of a demonstration scheme. Following the study by W.S Atkins and Partners of the application of CHP/DH in nine cities, the secretary of state for energy announced the government's intention to provide financial assistance to enable more detailed studies to be carried out on three schemes, which resulted in Belfast, Edinburgh, and Leicester being chosen for grant aid support in January 1985. Other studies though, for example, Sheffield and Tyneside, went ahead without government financial assistance." @default.
