- W916904655 abstract "This book chapter discusses and identifies conditions within housing units that can limit vector-borne disease in developing countries. Housing may be inadequate in this way for a number of reasons. While architects may determine that housing does not meet construction standards even low-income housing should meet public health standards. The most common pests are arthropods which include insects spiders and mites. Arthropods carrying microorganisms causing diseases (pathogens) between animals and people are known as disease vectors. A table is provided of pathogen-carrying arthropods and what diseases they cause. It is organized by those that breed on the body breed in the house breed in containers and sewage or enter the house to feed. Housing should be constructed of nonimported materials with local designs and techniques in order to be low cost easy to build permanent comfortable and acceptable. Local housing design is usually best suited to the climate and its changes. Design or other factors which are associated with arthropod infestations and disease include: inadequate foundations; open unscreened eaves; open unscreened windows and doors; cracked uneven flooring; dark poorly ventilated interiors; thatched roofs; shrinkage cracks in walls; inadequate roof overhang; water seepage; domestic animals; and stored food. Animal enclosures shade trees and organic refuse near the house also contribute to pest infestation. Four factors that affect pest control include the location of the house access of vectors restriction of food sources and restriction of hiding places. Constraints to low-cost housing are identified." @default.
