- W918583531 abstract "This essay analyzes intimacy in the HBO series Girls (2012 - ), a series praised for its distinctively realistic portrayal of life and sex. From a postfeminist perspective I argue that the series mirrors the postmodern individualized society and that this results in changing human bonds. By doing this I am also criticizing sociologist Zygmunt Bauman’s conclusion that “individualization of society” is happening at the cost of intimacy. Bauman speaks of two main challenges for intimacy: firstly, that the individual is exclusively seen as more important than the community in today’s individualized society and, secondly, that communication is malfunctioning. Bauman means that the two premises - individual-based choices and malfunctioning communication - lead to compromised intimacy and dissolving human bonds. By looking at close relationships in Girls I analyze individual-based choices and malfunctioning communication and discuss how they affect intimacy. This essay thus challenges the suggestion that an individualized world must be one without intimacy; nevertheless, the rules within relationships are being negotiated. In Girls, being a part of a community, a friendship or relationship is no longer a given but an individual choice; nevertheless, it is still a choice that exists. While Girls corresponds to the challenges Bauman theorizes, a postfeminist perspective nuances Bauman’s dystopian conclusion." @default.
