- W91979481 abstract "This chapter discusses protein metabolism and requirements in the elderly. Aging in man is the accumulation of insults and not merely the passing of years. These insults result from injury, infection, emotional and physical stress, malnutrition, genetic inheritance, randomly distributed biochemical errors, and overindulgence. A simple, economical method of evaluating nutritional status with respect to protein is the measurement of total serum proteins and of their principal fractions. Despite the general similarity of requirements for dietary protein in the young and the old, the needs for essential amino acids can well increase with age. The reduction in performance of an organ or organ system is commonly found in normal aging. For example, in the kidney, there are linear decrements in filtration rate, effective renal plasma flow, and transfer maxima for a variety of compounds between youth and old age. The basic cause for the production of the defective RNA is the accumulation of somatic mutations with age." @default.
