- W91985779 abstract "In the nineteenth century the north-western European port landscape changed considerably. The commercial staple market ports, with their focus on trade in relatively high value goods shipped in low volumes, became more and more involved in the transhipment of raw materials and the efficient handling of industrial commodity flows. Most ports in north-western Europe had to adapt their port infrastructure, built railway stations, construct docks and so on. In goes without saying, that the industrial era brought about a change in European port hierarchy. Some commercial ports lost their dominance, but others strengthened their positions and benefited from the new role the industrial era demanded. The ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp both played a significant role in this nineteenth century transformation process, but either port followed a different path of development." @default.
