- W91994722 abstract "36 Objectives To evaluate the incidence of ineffective esophageal motility (IEM) in symptomatic patients with suspected GERD. Hence to demonstrate relationship between IEM & gastroesophageal reflux (GER) scintigraphically. Methods Total of 49 patients underwent esophageal transit study (ETS) with bolus of 2 mCi of 99mTc-Sulfur Colloid in 15 ml of orange juice orally. The study was acquired in erect and supine position at 1 sec/fr for 1 min. The gastroesophageal reflux study was completed in the same sitting with additional 470 ml of orange juice given orally. Study was acquired at 10 sec/fr for 10 min in prone position. Results Of 49 patients studied, 11 had no scintigraphic evidence of GER. ETS in erect position was normal in all 11 patients, while 5 (45%) showed evidence of IEM in supine position. Total 7 patients showed Gr I GER with no evidence of IEM in erect position & all 7(100%) showing IEM in supine position. Of 21 patients with Gr II GER, 5 showed IEM in erect position (24%) while 19 had evidence of IEM in supine position (90%). Out of 10 patients who showed Gr III GER, 6 showed IEM in erect position (60%) while, all (100%) showed IEM in supine position. Conclusions We were able to demonstrate strong relationship between IEM & GER in symptomatic adult patients with suspected GERD. Further, incidence of IEM in erect position increased with increase in severity of GER. In addition, symptomatic patients in whom there was no demonstrable GER, almost half showed IEM suggesting IEM may be primary disorder leading to GERD" @default.
