- W91997763 abstract "Introduction Parents play an important role in the educational process (Becher, 1984). Research indicates that children whose parents are involved in schools have less behavior problems, increased achievement, and lower dropout rates. The critical link to involving parents is teachers. Teachers initiate the communication and establish the environment which leads to collaboration between the groups. Yet the communication skills do not just appear. Teachers need to be provided with strategies and techniques for working with families (Brand, 1996). To provide the necessary support is the role of administrators. Administrators can also remove inhibitors so home-school partnerships can flourish. Initiating, improving, and sustaining communication among the three groups is a worthy goal which benefits learners. This article describes a workshop designed for the three sides of the communication triangle, parents, teachers, and school administrators, with the purpose of establishing a home-school communication plan. Development of the Workshop The staff development workshop was initiated by the assistant principal of a rural elementary school who contacted a faculty member about possibly planning and conducting a workshop on parental involvement. After further discussions with the assistant principal, the real concern was brought to light and was more specific than just parental involvement. The administrator's real concern involved the type of communication that was occurring between parents and teachers. Several illustrative situations were shared and led to the identification of the following areas that needed to be addressed during the workshop: flexibility in meeting with parents, communication during these parent/teacher conferences and informal discussions between parents and teachers that stemmed from a child's negative behavior. The developers of the workshop wanted each part of the triangle (administrators, teachers, and parents) present in order to represent their own issues and concerns. A list of parents who were representative of the parent population of the school was requested. From the list of parents, one parent volunteered to come on short notice to the workshop. In addition to the parent representative, the workshop included 22 teachers, the parent involvement coordinator, the assistant principal, and the principal. The staff development workshop was two hours in length. Description of the Workshop To make meaningful and sustained changes to current policy, the participants had to have ownership of any conceived communications plan. The role of the workshop coordinators was to facilitate discussions by asking questions, contributing additional information and providing guidance at appropriate times. Final decisions regarding the communications plan were made by the participants collectively, not by any one group represented and most definitely not by the workshop facilitators. The structure of the staff development workshop was to begin to establish reciprocal home-school relationships through proactive approaches developed by the administrators, teachers, and parents. The think-pair-share process was used throughout the workshop. Participants were asked to think about each part, discuss their ideas in small groups, then share ideas as a whole group. Since the whole emphasis of the workshop was to establish a communication plan for the school an understanding of shared responsibility, respect and a partnership mentality needed to be established. The purpose of communication needed to be established early on in the workshop, so a specific plan of action could be developed in order to achieve the purpose. The purpose statement that was established at the workshop is as follows: To develop partnerships with parents, teachers, and administrators where responsibility is shared in order to enable learners to achieve their highest potential, academically, socially, and emotionally. …" @default.
