- W9207461 abstract "The thorium market continued weak, and U.S. demand was more than adequately met in 1975. Thorium was recovered from sludges generated during production of rare earth oxides from monazite, and excess sludges were stored in the producing company's holding area for future processing. The potentially large market for thorium in nuclear applications became much less certain during 1975. All orders in the U.S. for commercial gas-cooled, high-temperature reactors (HTGRs) were canceled or delayed. A combination of economic factors and mechanical difficulties during testing of the first commercial HTGR resulted in the collapse of the market. Inflation and lower demand for electricity made economics of HTGR operations questionable. Furthermore, long delays in starting the first large commercial 330-MW HTGR at Fort St. Vrain, Colo., led to a reluctance among utilities to invest in a new technology that had not been operated under industrial conditions. In January 1976, General Atomic Co. (GAC), the only U.S. producer of the HTGR, reduced its work force, but it had been discussing with ERDA means for funding construction of the HTGR on a demonstration basis. Work is continuing on construction of a GAC plant for production of thorium-uranium fuels. During January, one HTGR, a 40-MW plantmore » at Peach Bottom, Pa., ended operations. Non-nuclear uses of thorium in mantles for gas lamps, refractories, and in metallurgy remained modest. Supply, demand, prices, government policies, and outlook are discussed. (MCW)« less" @default.
