- W92092841 abstract "A consideration of recent data from the molecular biology of pro-and eukaryotes has led Harrison Echols and myself independently to very similar ideas about the way in which evolution might proceed discontinuously, a way which he calls “inducible evolution” and which I call “stress-triggered evolution.” Echols deals primarily with important observations on the stress-induced “SOS” system in 15. coli, which leads to an increase in point mutations. Such systems may play an important role in evolution. The essence of the idea of stress-triggered evolution, on the other hand, is that there exist specific genetic architectures in organisms that have co-evolved with internal, cooperative mutagenic agents such as viruses, plasmids and transpos-able elements such that environmental stress will tend to trigger bursts of genomic change. This article explores ways in which such cooperative interactions could have evolved through both individual and group selection, and suggests the kinds of experimental tests that would be necessary to attempt to verify the existence of such a process." @default.
