- W921651277 abstract "The new method of synthesis of sulphides and nitrides nanoparticles is reported, allowing unprecedented control over solids morphology. The key idea is the use of an oxygen acceptor (oxoacid) such as CCl4 in the preparation of sulphides and (oxy)nitrides from binary (TiO2, MoO3), mixed oxides AMO4 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba, M= Mo, W) and similar compounds of other transition metals (AxMOy A= Li, Na, K, Zn, Co, Ni.. M = T, Nb, Ta..). Adding of an oxoacid gas to the stream of NH3 or H2S leads to a drastic increase of solid-gas reactivity. The reactions otherwise thermodynamically unfavourable can occur under relatively soft conditions, due to a strong affinity of CCl4 towards oxygen ions. Original morphologies and compositions of sulphides and nitrides can be obtained, not available previously. The general approach is exemplified by several case studies. In case of AMO4 compounds, the mixtures of a TM sulphide or an (oxy)nitride and a chloride of an electropositive metal AClx are obtained. After removal of a soluble AClx compound, the resulting solids consist of hollow particles replicating the initial morphology of oxide precursor, at the micro- or nanoscale. Highly dispersed Mo2N and W2N were obtained this way, showing developed mesoporosity and interesting catalytic properties in hydrodeoxygenation reaction1. In case of TiO2, nitridation with a mixture of CCl4 and NH3 allows reducing of the solid gas reaction temperature and a substantial increase of the amount of nitrogen incorporated in the Ti-O-N solid product. Nitrogen-doped titanium oxide obtained using the new technique shows improved photocatalytic activity2. Mechanistical insight into the solid gas reactions leading to sulphides and nitrides is provided by temperature programmed reaction study. A rationale of observed reactivity is given on the basis of soft-hard acids and bases theory." @default.
