- W924744903 abstract "This chapter discusses the construction of equipment for the measurement of relaxation spectra by the temperature-jump method. In principle, relaxation methods can be applied to any system, where an overall net change in concentrations does not occur. Thus, systems in a steady state can be perturbed and the relaxation spectrum determined if the steady state persists for a sufficiently long time. Application of steady state perturbation techniques to the elucidation of reaction mechanisms is still in a stage of infancy. However, construction of a temperature jump apparatus directly coupled to a rapid mixing flow system will be considered. With this apparatus, perturbation of steady states with halftimes as short as milliseconds can be accomplished. Thus, the temperature jump method can be applied to both reversible and essentially irreversible reactions. The temperature-jump method has a wide range of application to biochemical systems, because of the sensitivity of such systems to temperature." @default.
