- W924928685 abstract "Correspondence with Houghton Mifflin Co. Mary Hallock Foote Grass Valley, Calif. May 6” 23 % The North Star Mines.1 My dear Mr Greenslet:- I am sending you by express a big batch of my fatigued-looking “copy”; and I fancy I hear you groan as you say: “More Remeniscences”! [sic] I have smiled at the other old babblers myself—but I read them! If you will be kind enough to wade through this, it will give an idea of what the book is meant to be: it will be in three parts, “Eastern Homes, Western Camps, and Camps that were Homes” or something like that. What you have here is about one half—It is very detailed; but I shall not repeat, for instance, the descriptions of journeys; xxx nor of illnesses (of children)—but I know you will agree that the first illness of one’s first baby is an unforgettable experience. Where I hope to put in my best work is on the Idaho irrigation epic—really irrigation is big—that ten years was worth remembering. Then, after all those dreams and disappointments, we went back to what by comparison we thought was the tents of Jacob. It wasn’t of course! You can have Jacob anywheren-if you want him! This, and Idaho, were the two greater Camps which became to us in every sense of the word Homes; yet were never without their curious haunting longings for the old ones in the East. Once you have it in your blood, you never h get it out. Well then: first, I want your opinion of the interest of the things; will it hold you? Then, will you look upon it as a book you would undertake? and if so would you rather wait till I am dead so to speak? There is no need to be delicate about it—I am talking from a business point of view and I really do expect to die some day. Finally, if you think the whole idea and the work itself worth while, would you try if the Atlantic or whatever magazine you think best, would publish parts of it that the author might realize something on it that way? Or wouldn’t you do anything of the sort? The first part, “Eastern Homes”, might go by itself, as a sketch, perhaps? The serial idea is purely mercenary of course. I am in no hurry to have it in print. But I’d like to get the price of my railroad-fares out of it and then I’d come on and have a last talk with you (and incidentally see my daughter at the Wharfehouse)2—for we old gold-miners are the Forgotten Man these days. Except when the xxx tax-list is made up. [End Page 114] Thank you for listening to me so long. And let me know what you think of my Family Chronicle. I love my “old Quakes”, as Betty calls them. And when I read a so-called Quaker story (like one lately in the Atlantic) I say, “Go on! what do you know about the Quakers!” Mrs Hegan Rice makes her Quakers go by the title of “Brother” and “Sister” So and So.3 Where does she find such Friends as those? Perhaps in the land of “Bre’r Rabbit” the Friends do use those Methodist and Baptist terms, which all the Friends I ever knew would—frankly scorn! They were extremely haughty you know, about themselves. Sincerely, as of old— Mary Hallock Foote Ferris Greenslet, Esq. Boston, Mass. The North Star Mines, Calif. July 6/23 My dear Mr Greenslet: Some time ago I sent you the first chapters of a book-scheme in the future, called Backgrounds with Figures. I think it was ill-judged of me, and not considerate of a publisher’s time; and even if you had time to read it, you will not care to pass judgment on a thing which is not half done … Also, as I go on with it, I need the earlier part for comparison and I have no other copy which is readable. So, please don’t..." @default.
