- W925854501 abstract "ABS>Cobalt-60 was used as a tracer in an attempt to establish the origin of sands on the floor of Hiigata Harbor. In the first survey, a total activity of 140 mC was released in August at five points and the movement of labeled sands was followed by a GM counter until the end of October of the same year. The surveys showed that the sands moved relatively slowly in the summer. Labeled sand was found up to 100 m from the injection point within three months in the most dispersed area. In the second survey, a total activity of 500 mC was released in November in a similar manner, but at three points, instead of five. The subsequent movement of sand was measured in April of the following year in order to study the movement by storms during the winter. As a result, it was found that the activity due to nuclear detonations in the autumn of the previous year prevented accurate measurement. Because of the activity, nuclide analysis of sand samples taken from the bottom was performed using a pulse height analyzer. By this analysis it was confirmed that the main constituent (emitting gamma rays) was Zr/sup 95/- Nb/supmore » 95/, followed by Ru/sup 103/ and Ce/sup 142/Pr/sup 142/. The movement of littoral sands under sea water was investigated using Sc/sup 46/- glass as tracer at the west coast of Niigata for two months from April to May, 1962. This survey was carried out to determine the main direction of transport of the sand material in the sea area within 500 m of the coast line. By this survey, the trajectories of radioactive sands could be exactly determined. Then, the relation between the trajectory and oceanographical data (wave, current, etc.) was studied. The results suggested that the sands in this area were, as a whole, transported westward along the coast line through the year. (auth)« less" @default.
