- W92852143 abstract "Exercise electrocardiography is one of the most commonly performed diagnostic tests in clinical medicine. Typically and traditionally, clinicians perform the test to look for ST-segment changes induced by exercise, which are thought to reflect stress-induced ischemia. The usefulness of the test for purely diagnostic purposes, however, has been called into question because of poor test accuracy (1). Furthermore, the sensitivity of the test may be grossly overestimated and the specificity similarly underestimated because almost all studies suffer from verification bias (2). One study, which was truly unbiased, showed that the sensitivity of the exercise test was only 40–45% for detecting coronary lesions of 50% diameter stenosis or more (2). Another limitation of using the exercise test for strictly diagnostic purposes stems from inherent problems related to the coronary angiogram, which has been shown to be an inadequate measure of the biological severity of arterial wall disease (3)." @default.
