- W92887960 abstract "We share our conversations with Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, presenting her creative process, distinctive storytelling style, and reflections on writing about the realities of indigenous people.OUR CONVERSATIONS with Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve began when we set out to explore the value of multicultural literature and the opportunity it affords children to access the diverse literary traditions of other cultures. The sharing of culturally accurate and high-quality literature offers children chance to connect with the unique aspects of humanity throughout the world (Henderson & Young, 2011). This award-winning author, best known for her children's books about the Rosebud Sioux life and culture, combines history and legend to create culturally rich and authentic Native American stories. A former English teacher and school counselor, Sneve is inspired to write by the many aspects of her life and then eloquently shares those experiences with the reader. When asked what inspires her writing, Sneve acknowledged that the experiences of her life helped shape her writing:How the sun rises over the mountain, something my child said or felt, words someone has spoken or from story I heard, my own and others' experiences, places I visit. I am open to inspiration from all I hear, see, sense, want, and dislike (personal communication, October 23, 2009, March 23, 2011).Drawing from these inspirations, Sneve has body of work that depicts Native American storytelling. Her collection of children's literature and poetry broadens the reader's views about the important values of the Native American culture, such as memory, language, and storytelling (Coltelli, 1990). Dancing Teepees: Poems of American Indian Youth, Sneve (1989) selected poetry, as well as wrote her own poems, from the oral tradition of North American Indians and from contemporary tribal poets. The poetry reflects the experiences of youth, and much of her work focuses on being honest and accurate about Native American life. She indicated, In doing so, I hope to dispel stereotypes and to show my reading audience that Native Americans have proud past, viable present, and hopeful future (personal communication, October 23, 2009, March 23, 2011).Here, we bring together our interviews with Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve and highlight her unique storytelling ability. The goal, as educators, was not to describe her work critically but to illuminate her creative process. Therefore, the questions posed focused on Sneve's writing style and her dedication to authentically sharing the Rosebud Sioux culture. We hope to show through her interviews and her poetry the power and importance of bringing children and stories together in an authentic and purposeful way. Burnham (2005) states,Growing up on the Rosebud reservation, Sneve spent much of her youth listening to her grandmothers tell stories. The women fostered in her belief that the spoken word was sacred, and yearning to tell tales when her own time came. (p. 1)In the following poem, Sneve (1989) illustrates the power of language and its sacred format.I WATCHED AN EAGLE SOARGrandmother,I watched an eagle soarhigh in the skyuntil cloud covered him up.Grandmother,I still saw the eaglebehind my eyes.-Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve (p. 18)In her numerous works, Sneve has shared her Rosebud Sioux heritage through picture books, poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Her responses to our questions can be compared with a connecting thread which stitches and holds together the various experiences, conditions, and realities whether they be beautiful and pleasant or mixed with sadness and pain (Henderson & Mitchell, 1988, p. 67). this article, we share Sneve's creative process, her distinctive storytelling style, and her reflections on writing about the realities of indigenous people. The following poem provides foundation for understanding and connecting her literary works to our purpose in sharing her stories, poems, and commentaries. …" @default.
