- W92893992 abstract "In 1983 an unlikely group of Lebanese small traders, artisans, peddlers, and peasants gathered in the Christian town of Dayr alQamar made the headlines in the international press. For centuries, the Christian inhabitants of that town and of other small towns and villages located in the predominantly Druze district of Mount Lebanon known as the Shuf had lived peacefully among the Druze. But there were exceptions: in 1860 the grievances of the peasants against their landlords in the Christian, northern part of Mount Lebanon escalated into a communal conflict when it spread to the southern, religiously mixed, district of Mount Lebanon, leading to the greatest sectarian outbreak in the history of the Ottoman Empire. On June 20, 1860, Druze attacked Dayr al-Qamar, plundered it, set fire to houses, and killed many of its inhabitants. In the fall of 1983, renewed fighting between Druze and Phalange militia led to a three-month siege by the Druze of Dayr al-Qamar, where thousands of Christians from neighboring areas had gathered. There were, of course, differences between the two situations. The territorial limits of modern Lebanon were set up in the 1920s, and its boundaries differ from the Mount Lebanon of the nineteenth century. In the 1860s sectarian strife spread all the way to Damascus, which today is not even within the borders of the republic of Lebanon. In the nineteenth century, the conflict involved Druze and Christians mostly Maronites but also Greek Catholics and Greek Orthodox and the massacres in Damascus involved Sunni" @default.
