Solar energy is one of the alternative energy sources and although it is delivered free of charge, its conversion requires special components and implies investment costs. These costs become higher as the total efficiency of the system lowers. Solar powered water pumps are one of the most attractive applications in this field. They can be used for pumping drinking water supplies or for lift irrigation purposes. The development by Dornier has concentrated on water pumps for the provision of drinking water supplies. If electric energy is desired, this can be delivered too by solar thermal processes. The application of the engines depends mainly on the system capacity desired. Most current cooling facilities are based on the absorption principle. Solar desalination methods using the greenhouse principle are well established. Other principles are based on multistage desalination units, using flat plate collectors or concentrating collector systems. Dornier System has developed a new solar powered water pump that can be successfully used in many developing countries." @default.
