- W930650930 abstract "There were aspects of Aban Jau's life and times that were unique, but the arc of his career was not at all exceptional. Time and again, we find the names of important leaders associated with the fluctuating fortunes of longhouse communities, so that we might think of the longhouses themselves as having a life cycle to match the man's. For all his bravado, Aban Jau failed to impose his ideas of what his role should be, and his end shows that failure – steadily abandoned and finally alone in his empty house. His case is instructive because it represents an extreme example of a general tendency. Moreover, his times cannot be contrasted with a previous epoch of peace and stability. As far back as oral histories reach, there is evidence of struggle between communities and rival leaders within communities. Consequently, Aban Jau's career represents not novelty, but an intensification of processes that had happened before and would happen again. To prove the point, it is only necessary to follow the fate of the people who abandoned him to his fate in his empty longhouse. Aban Jau's Rivals Even at the height of his career, Aban Jau had rivals. In the Seping (Figure 02-01), the Lepo Anan leader, Tama Lian Avit, assembled a large community of even more diverse elements than those at Long Batan." @default.
