- W93160617 abstract "Lyme disease is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi (Burgdorfer et al., 1982; Johnson et al., 1984) and is the most common tick-borne zoonosis (Steere, 1989). The etiologic spirochete of Lyme disease was first identified by Burgdorfer et al. (1982) and subsequently isolated by Barbour et al. (1983). If the infection is not treated with antibiotics, the organism can invade the brain, nerves, eyes, joints, and heart and produce morbidity (Steere, 1989). This disease is characterized by early skin lesions termed erythema migrans, and intermittent arthritis, cardiac, and neurologic manifestations. Thus far, at least four genospecies and five seroprotective groups of Lyme disease spirochetes have been proposed on the basis of genetic and molecular determinants (Lovrich et al., 1993). To date, all North American isolates of Lyme disease spirochetes are B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (Baranton et al., 1992). Many European and Asian isolates belong to B. garinii sp. nov. and B. afzelii, formerly known as the VS461 group (Baranton et al., 1992; Canica et al., 1993; Park et al., 1993). B. garinii sp. nov. may be associated with the neurologic and cardiac syndromes and B. afzelii with the cutaneous symptoms of erythema migrans or acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans of Lyme disease in Europe (Canica et al., 1993; van Dam et al., 1993). The fourth genospecies, F63B group of spirochetes, has been identified from ticks in Japan and its etiologic significance is unknown (Postic et al., 1993)." @default.
