- W93166144 abstract "Almost ten years ago, I wrote an essay for The Sarmatian Review which I claimed that in terms of literature, American Polonia may indeed be on the edge of a Renaissance.1 I cited signs of heightened activity: Darryl Poniscan's 1970s novels about the Eastern Pennsylvania Buddusky family, Matt Babinski's urban Massachusetts novels, Victor Contoski's anthology Blood of My Blood, John Minczewski's Concert at Chopin's House, and Anne Pellowski's award winning series of children's books. I called special attention to newer writers such as Stuart Dybek, Anthony Bukoski and Gary Gildner. If my prediction were too bold 1993, it seems rather tame today. Since then, Anthony Bukoski has published two more collections of short fiction, Leslie Pietrzyk wrote a warmly received first novel, Pears a Willow Tree, Gary Gildner's memoir, My Grandfather's Book: Generations of an American Family has recently appeared, Stuart Dybek continues to publish acclaimed fiction and poetry and a young woman named Suzanne Strempek Shea has published four novels nine years. Even so, American writers of Polish descent have yet to make a significant entry into American letters despite the public's appetite for ethnic literature as demonstrated the selections of Oprah Winfrey's Book Club and Jerome Weeks's recent celebratory feature story and review of Sandra Cisneros and her new novel, Caramelo. Weeks points out that the 1990s Latino writers finally reached the rest of America.2 This cannot be said of Polonian writers although Suzanne Strempek Shea comes closest terms of general popularity and sales. Suzanne Strempek Shea has written four novels to date: Selling the Lite of Heaven 1994: Hoopi Shoopi Donna 1997; Lily of the Valley 1999; and Around Again 2002. The novels are four of a kind. All are situated the Connecticut River Valley of Western Massachusetts, probably the largest agrarian Polonian community the United States. All have contemporary settings and female protagonists early/mid life 30-somethings as our children might say." @default.
