There have been various demonstrations of sub-micron light manipulation, but still the most critical issue ahead is the development of new devices that will reliably operate at such length scales. Here, we describe our efforts to meet these challenges using photonic crystal nanocavities. In particular, we cover advantages of these structures for lasing due to control in spontaneous emission rate via the modification of vacuum field density. We present ultrafast dynamics of lasers with direct signal modulation speeds in excess of 100 GHz. We also present the interactions of nanocavity lasers that are strongly coupled for improved efficiency. Design and fabrication techniques of these novel structures are also addressed." @default.
