- W935352324 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses different problems related to soil conservation and the progress made in this field. The term soil conservation is usually applied to the beneficial effect obtained from the use of one or more methods to control soil erosion. The principal objective of soil conservation is to manage the land so that the physical value of the soil is preserved for future use. It is a profitable procedure as it permits the farmer to utilize added or natural fertility that would otherwise be carried away by water or wind. Soil conservation in some areas in United States is the big problem. Many soils in semiarid and arid regions contain a sufficient quantity of available plant nutrients to produce maximum crop yields under the climatic conditions that prevail. In these areas, good management of the land consists primarily in the adoption of methods that conserve the soil and increase the efficiency of rainfall. Land classification problems, cropping systems, and terracing and contour farming are discussed in the chapter. Details of crop residue management and strip cropping are also provided." @default.
