- W935565590 abstract "This chapter discusses scope and advantages of cultivation of olives in desert areas. The majority of olive varieties are more or less adapted to desert environments, due to a long evolutionary period of natural selection of olive plant material to these conditions. Both genetic and environmental effects are expressed in typical physio-morphological systems that characterize many of the desert-adapted plant species. Some of the important mechanisms that have been developed by olive trees to survive under desert conditions, include the ability of its root system to collect water from marginal soils, protection against water loss due to leaf anatomy, ability to control transpiration, and an efficient water hydraulic system. Desertification is estimated to make 12 million hectares of land useless for cultivation every year. In some countries up to 70 percent of the land is vulnerable to desertification, and thousands of people are being forced to leave their homes in search of better living conditions. This can affect people living in nondryland areas, making desertification an issue relevant to people everywhere. However, there is a huge amount of desert or desert-like land created by the global climate change and other desertification factors that is now available for potential agriculture. Choosing desert areas that are characterized by conditions of low atmospheric humidity provides a significant advantage for olive oil cultivation, as risks of insect pests such as olive fly is reduced. During recent decades, significant progress has been made in agricultural biotechnologies specifically related to desert cultivation. The most important field of development is concerned with controlled saline drip irrigation technologies. Furthermore the initiative for planting olives in marginal drylands and/or deserts has advantages for economic and ecological sustainability." @default.
