- W93566195 abstract "Publisher Summary Chronic inflammatory lesions are heterogeneous; however, there is evidence that macrophages always play an essential role in their pathogenesis. Macrophages can interact with at least four other cell types in the generation of chronic inflammatory lesions—T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, K cells, and fibroblasts. In addition, polymorphonuclear leukocytes, blood platelets, and basophils may influence the function of macrophages during the initiation or in acute exacerbations of chronic inflammatory lesions. The relative prominence of each cell type varies in different types of chronic inflammation, and interactions between the cells are still poorly understood. Chronic inflammatory lesions may arise by the direct interaction of the inflammatory agent with macrophages or, more often, after an immunological response involving either or both T and B cells. This chapter discusses the direct effects of agents inducing inflammation on macrophages and the ways in which products of lymphocytes may stimulate macrophages to release mediators relevant to the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation. It also discusses the recent observations on how the products of stimulated macrophages may affect the function of lymphocytes and fibroblasts." @default.
