- W93595910 abstract "of life* the development of values and attitudes, the development of creative interests and talents, and the meeting of emotional needs. These are all sound reasons for participation in the arts, but recent concerns with basic education and economic accountability have, at times, unfortunately placed these rationales outside the primary goals of school systems. Current research in psychology, education and the arts, however, offers evidence that the arts also contribute in very basic ways to cognitive development. In this article we will briefly look at research into three of the ways in which the arts promote cognitive development through the use of fantasy, the use of imagery, and the use of a variety of media (see Ives, 1979a, for an extensive bibliography of the arts and cognition). This research indicates that retaining the arts in education is not just an extra but rather an essential component which historical analysis reveals was artificially separated from the curriculum." @default.
