- W936696138 abstract "Mastication is a rhythmic function involving the coordinated actions of the peripheral effector organs, sensory input, and central nervous control. The common ancestor of Pan and Homo, which inhabited the tropical forests and had a fruit-eating habit, was divided into western and eastern populations about eight million years ago. The eastern population evolved on the savanna to become humans by shifting from a fruit-eating to an omnivorous habit via a herbivorous and carnivorous habit. This chapter addresses the question of whether or not vigorous chewing activates widespread regions of the brain, and also explores the factors responsible for the encephalization of the cerebral cortex during human phylogeny. The data obtained from a PET mastication study shows that vigorous gum chewing increases human cerebral blood flow in the primary sensorimotor areas by 25–28%, the supplementary motor area and insulae by 9–17%, and the cerebellum and striatum by 8–11%. This suggests that encephalization of the cerebral cortex may have been caused by cerebral blood flow activation." @default.
