- W937478575 abstract "The neurons of the central nervous system (CNS) possess a capacity of recovery well beyond that assumed by the traditional medical culture. Neurotrophic factors (NTFs) known to elicit fundamental phenotypic changes in neurons during development are capable of affecting these cells in mature, fully differentiated animals. A concept that is emerging from such experimentation is that NTFs (or their derivatives) can be used as drugs to elicit trophic responses in damaged neurons of the CNS. The hypothetical scheme assumes that diverse NTFs are produced in relatively large amounts during development, securing the differentiation and connectivity of neurons in a programmed temporal-spatial fashion. During the developmental period, distinct sets of neurons are probably dependent on these factors for their survival; a situation that can closely be reproduced in tissue culture conditions. The levels of NTFs decrease considerably during early post-natal stages to basal levels during adulthood. The main consequence of this basal production of NTFs during adulthood is the maintenance of phenotypic characteristics of mature neurons, their arborization and synaptic connectivity." @default.
