The neutral, undoped state of the polymer was stable in a pH region above 4. However, the polymer received oxidation (or p-doping) in acidic aqueous solutions in the presence of O2 and H2O2. The p-doping of the polymer with O2 is explained by the following equation: (CH2CH2CH2SO3H)Th (1a) + (1/4)O2 → (CH2CH2CH2SO3−)Th+ (1b) + (1/2)H2O; 1a represents the repeating unit of P3(PrSO3H)Th. The oxidation reaction with O2 obeyed the psudo-first-order rate law, −d([1a]−[1a]eq)/dt=kobs([1a]−[1a]eq); [1a]eq represents concentration of 1a at the equilibrium; kobs at 298 K was evaluated as 1.54×10−5 s−1 under air. Temperature dependence of kobs gave kinetic parameters of ΔG‡=43.4 kJ mol−1, ΔH‡=31.4 kJ mol−1, and ΔS‡=−40.2 J mol−1 K−1, respectively, at 298 K under air. kobs increased roughly linearly with the O2 pressure, giving the second-order rate equation, −d([1a]−[1a]eq)/dt=k1([1a]−[1a]eq)[O2]. H2O2 caused very rapid p-doping of the polymer to give a highly oxidized state." @default.
