- W93838162 abstract "Bam earthquake occurred on 26th of December 2003, at 5:26 am local time near the city of Bam that is located at southeast of Iran in Kerman Province. During the earthquake over 26,200 people in Bam, Baravat (as a small town in the east of Bam suburbs) and a few village were killed and about 14,360 were injured. About 99.6 percent of buildings were damaged and all lifelines were damaged. Its direct detriments only on building and lifelines was more than one billion $US. The lifelines systems (watel; powel; gas, telecommunication, road, bridge and qanat) were severely damaged. Present paper has discussed on electric power systems in Bam City and its suburbs especially in Baravat during the Bam earthquake. Above all, seismic @agilities of power substation and electric pole are discussed by using simplijied analyses. 1. OUTLINE OF EARTHQUAKE AND GROUND MOTIONS Historical earthquakes1) in the vicinity of Bam are shown in Fig. 1. There occurred several big earthquakes along the faults located a little bit northern parts of the Bam Faults. The Bam Fault is located between two cities of Bam and Baravat as shown in Fig. 2. The location of the epicenter of the earthquake have been determined by IIEES~) at 29.01N and 58.26E in lOkm SW of Bam town that is close to the location mentioned by USGS~)(28.99N, 58.29 E ). The Moment Magnitude of 6.5 for the earthquake (Mw) has been measured based on the preliminary evaluations and the focal depth is estimated to be 8km based on S-P evaluation on the records obtained from the main shock. The seismic intensity of ,the earthquake is estimated to be IO=IX according to the EMS98 scale. The attenuation of the strong motion seems to be considerable as the surface evidences and damages decrease sharply at the direction perpendicular to the Bam fault. Although the focal mechanism of Bam earthquake was reported to be strike slip having a small vertical component2). Fig. 1 Historical earthquake1' Fig. 2 Barn Fault BHRC (Building and Housing Research Center) ' ) is observing strong earthquake records all over Iran. The seismometer in Bam was located inside the building of municipal ofice, which had severe damage as shown in Fig. 3. The recorded strong acceleration are shown in Fig. 4. The strong motions recorded at the Bam station show a high value of vertical component. The maximum PGAs for the horizontal components are 0.7 and 0.8g, and 1.0 1g for the vertical component. The predominant periods of the records are 5 to 6 Hz for horizontal motions and 8 Hz for vertical motions as shown in Fig. 5. The longitudinal motion has another predominant period of 1 Hz, and then the mechanism of the fault rupture is considered to have multiple breaks. Bam earthquake has been accompanied by some geotechnical phenomena such as landslide, liquefaction and land subsidence.
