- W93850112 abstract "Since the publication of W. T. Stace's Mysticism and Philosophy,'1 in 1960, it has established itself as the standard point of departure for critical studies of mysticism; as Professor William Wainwright has remarked (himself an acknowledged authority on mysticism), 'any serious consideration of mysticism must sooner or later come to terms with Stace'.2 Walter Stace was born in London in 1886, and educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh, and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated in Philosophy. Following university he served in the Ceylon Civil Service from 1910-32, during which time he produced a number of important philosophical studies (on Greek Philosophy, Hegel, and aesthetics), as well as gaining a D.Litt. degree from Trinity in 1929. In 1932 he was appointed to the philosophy department of Princeton University (USA), where, after a short period of teaching and writing, he became Stuart Professor of Philosophy. At the time of his death in 1967 he was regarded as one of North America's most distinguished philosophers. This article is intended as both a tribute to Stace's contribution to the study of mysticism, and a development of the position I set out in an earlier article.3 My earlier interpretation of mysticism agrees with Stace in a number of fundamental respects, and consequently criticism of him at points where we agree are ipso facto criticisms of my own position. For this reason I propose to defend Stace's account of mysticism at three points. I shall argue: (1) that there is no distinctively theistic or Christian mystical experience; (2) that his distinction between mystical experience and doctrinal interpretation can be sustained (albeit using a different terminology); and (3) that there are good reasons for believing that all mystical experiences (in a sense to be defined below) are essentially the same. Although strictly (1) is implicit in (3), it is nevertheless sufficiently different to warrant separate treatment. In Mysticism and Philosophy Stace defined mysticism as an 'experi ence of unity which the mystic believes to be in some sense ultimate and basic to the world'.4 Within this definition he distinguished further between two types of mystical experience: one in which union is achieved with the objects of the external world, and quite" @default.
