- W93851336 abstract "Emotion has often been treated as separate from cognition. In some traditions, however, it has been regarded as damaging to reason: Darwin, for instance, argued that human emotional expressions derive from evolution and from infancy, and that they have an atavistic quality. Recent research has indicated that emotion and rationality are not antagonists, but that emotions can guide cognition and social interaction, especially where no fully rational solutions are possible. Experimentally it has been shown that happiness improves creative problem solving and also social cooperation; but it encourages cognitive short-cuts and schematic processing. By contrast, negative emotions prompt careful, step-by-step, processing. Among negative emotions, sadness has been found principally to affect memory, whereas anxiety principally affects attention by inducing concentration on issues of danger and safety. Research in psychiatric epidemiology has shown that severe life events in the form of losses such as bereavements, or chronic difficulties such as unemployment, are typical causes of depression. Severe threats to belief systems and ways of life can cause clinical anxiety. Both depression and clinical anxiety are emotional states that impair everyday cognitive and social life. Nonetheless, in general emotions are heuristics that assist cognition." @default.
