- W939260811 abstract "The gastroesophageal junction is defined as an imaginary line that is drawn at the point where the esophagus ends and the stomach begins. The only criteria that mark the gastroesophageal junction are the point of the peritoneal reflection, the association of esophageal submucosal glands with esophageal epithelium, and the proximal limit of gastric oxyntic mucosa. The esophageal submucosal glands drain by ducts that open at the lumen and are a useful histologic marker for esophagus. These glands and ducts are sporadically present in the esophagus but they are not found in every biopsy of the esophagus and their absence does not mean that the biopsy is not esophageal. Cardiac mucosa occurs as a result of reflux-induced columnar transformation of the esophagus and it always represents reflux-induced metaplastic esophageal columnar epithelium, irrespective of its location. When cardiac mucosa is found in what is called the proximal stomach by the present endoscopic definition of the gastroesophageal junction (proximal limit of the rugal folds), it actually lines the esophagus. The extent of cardiac mucosa distal to the tubular esophagus and the proximal limit of the rugal folds vary between zero (normal) and a maximum of 3 cm." @default.
