- W939655064 abstract "This chapter focuses on nutritional effects on non-mitotic aspects of central nervous system (CNS) development. There have been relatively few attempts to determine whether or not the non-mitotic events contributing to the “brain growth spurt” are vulnerable to under-nutrition. However, the available results suggest that the proposal that these events “may be vulnerable, simply because they are occurring rapidly at such a time” is perhaps too naive an interpretation of the way in which the developing brain is influenced by undernutrition. Although the functional consequences of the recovery of dendritic and synaptic deficiencies in the cerebral cortices of previously undernourished animals remain unknown, from a morphological standpoint the hypothesis is untenable. Clearly much work remains to be done before a general conclusion can be reached concerning the nutritional vulnerability of the non-mitotic aspects of CNS development. Indeed, the conflicting nature of the preliminary results described above suggests that such a generalization may not be possible. In that case, attention could perhaps better be directed at defining the vulnerability of those developmental events that have the greatest significance for subsequent CNS performance." @default.
