- W94000509 abstract "My purpose is to revisit issues that Richard Robin discussed in his groundbreaking essay on Peirce and normative science.1 There are one or two points where I differ with Robin's reading of Peirce and where I will argue difference. However, fact that we read same texts differently does not mean that one of us is mistaken. Peirce built his philosophy using what he described as multiform argumentation of middle ages (CP 5.264). He believed this to be method of the successful sciences. A philosophy using this method will trust rather to multitude and variety of its arguments than to conclusiveness of any one. Its reasoning should not form a chain which is no stronger than its weakest link, but a cable whose fibers may be ever so slender, provided they are sufficiently numerous and intimately connected. Different readings of such arguments may simply call our attention to different varieties of argument. A second peculiarity of medieval philosophy and of modern science is that an author can in good conscience argue from assumptions that are determined by a public consensus or by standpoint of an opponent, rather than by his or her private convictions. A reader interested in intrinsic value of arguments and another reader interested in determining private convictions of author would comment on arguments in very different" @default.
