- W940139921 abstract "This chapter provides a framework into which the accumulated knowledge of pineal function in the fishes can be channeled. It is still impossible to present a unified concept of pineal function; rather an attempt is made to review some of the evidence for the various current hypotheses concerning its function. Numerous investigators have shown that the pineal organ of the fishes have a light receptive function. The problem then is not the presence or absence of a function, but rather, a question of the precise function or functions. In fishes, the parapineal anlage usually shows some early ontogenetic development but is generally absent or rudimentary in adults, including the primitive ganoid Amia calva and the dipnoan Protopterus annectens. However, a parapineal body resembling a parietal eye of lizards has been described in at least one adult teleost. In other groups of fishes, a well-developed parapineal body with distinguishable photosensory-like cells is found only among the nonmyxinoid cyclostomes." @default.
