- W940723366 abstract "Background: New technologies and innovations have the power to swiftlydisrupt complete industries across the globe. This putspressure on companies to understand how new technologiescould change future product offerings and impact thebusiness model.Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide an example of hownew technology will generate new business models. Thisstudy is done as a case study within the maritime softwaremarket. To fulfill the purpose, the following questions willbe answeredWhat is expected from maritime software in fiveyears? How can cloud technology enable improvementssatisfying the requirements for future maritimesoftware? How should a business model for future maritimesoftware be designed?Method: This study was conducted as a case study at ABB CRC inVasteras, using an abductive approach. Mainly qualitativedata has been collected through secondary sources andinterviews with employees working at different BUs at ABB.Theoretical The study’s frame of reference includes theory regardingmaritime software, Framework: cloud computing and big data. The analysis model consists of three theoretical frameworks.A framework named TAIDA was used to develop scenarios. To help develop the future business model the theory of thebusiness model canvas by Osterwalder was used. In additionto this, inspiration has been taken from blue ocean strategythinking. Results: For the maritime software studied in this study, three keyareas were identified that future maritime software mustprovide and deliver to its customers in order to meet futureexpectationsImproving operational efficiencyEnabling centralized control and monitoringProviding more data to use for strategic and operationalanalyticsCloud technology could likely be a part of this future;however, internet connectivity could be a limiting factor thatneeds to be taken into account. Therefore two futuristicscenarios, showing how cloud technology could beintroduced, have been created.A suggested business model for the future maritime softwareis presentedProduct: The core value proposition is to improve thestrategic and operational decision making for both singleships as well as for entire fleets. Benefits include reducedcosts for the customer, increased safety, and improved abilityfor customers to make decisions that are data-based.Customer interface: The sales channel is not believed tonecessarily change from today. Cloud technology will notremove the use of personal contact in sales. As for how the software is deployed, parts of the product willbe delivered as a SaaS, whereas some functions will remainon-premise.Further investigation is necessary to determine whether touse a public, hybrid or private cloud hosting solution.Infrastructure management: ABB’s combination ofhardware and software is a key resource, making thecollaboration between different business units a key activity.Furthermore, a key activity will also be to alter the softwaredesign from being customized, towards modular andconfigurable software architecture.Financial aspect: The cost structure is highly dependent onthe selection of the deployment method of the cloud. It isclear that a public cloud would create more variable costsand considerably lower investment costs opposed to using aprivate cloud. The revenue streams could be structured as acombination of subscription and pay-per-use. The pay-peruseshould primarily focus on software functionalities with aless frequent use." @default.
