- W94092015 abstract "Much of human experience is influenced by social emotions, which are complex emotions (e.g., embarrassment, pride, and jealousy) that serve important relationship functions. Social emotions require that people be aware of their own mental states, as well as those of the people around them. Further, negative emotional responses elicited by socially inappropriate behaviors (e.g., shame and guilt) minimize the likelihood that the offending behavior will be repeated, thereby smoothing social interactions and supporting long-term relationships. Conversely, positive social behaviors often give rise to powerful social emotions (e.g., pride, love, and admiration). Patient research and recently emerging research using neuroscience techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging have imparted important insights into the neural processes that give rise to social emotions. Most prominently, imaging research has documented a crucial role of the medial prefrontal cortex in social emotions." @default.
