- W94374807 abstract "Individual aspects of hydrogeologic parameters favorable for waste disposal sites are readily known. Yet, some attempts at integration of values of parameters are confusing, leading to awkward regulatory actions. Antagonistic and synergistic relations among key parameters must be recognized and properly weighted. For example, the antagonistic relations between a favorable low water table and a favorable low permeability in humid regions are contrary and thwart site analysis; synergistic relations between low permeability of clays and ion exchange are add-on favorable considerations. Weighting and integrating values of indices of each key parameter represent a proper logical procedure; yet, offsetting values of parameters caused by antagonistic relations result in a total index value of potential favorability that is less distinctive and less useful than desired. For example, the DRASTIC program offers useful descriptive results but can be misleading if a final simplistic index without qualifying explanation is displayed for mapping the vulnerability for contamination. Federal and state programs on both well and waste site characterization do not have the type of framework that provides optimal values from generalizations linking interrelations of parameters. The proposed framework can (1) display useful, a priori, conceptual characterization models, (2) check for reasonableness of specific data values, more » and (3) strengthen data interpretation.« less" @default.
