- W94401125 abstract "The threshold of bedload motion is important for predictions of sediment transport rates, channel migration and stability, and for river restoration and structure design. For a given grain size, the dimensionless critical shear stress can vary significantly between rivers. Estimates of the reach-averaged critical shear stress are typically from competence, reference transport rate, or visual measurements. Each of these three methods includes inherent bias, which complicate comparisons between methods and the use of one reference critical Shields stress. Furthermore, the grain-size distribution influences the relative mobility of a given particle through hiding effects, which enhance the exposure and relative motion of coarse grains and reduce the mobility of finer sediment. Sediment motion is fundamentally controlled by the balance of forces acting on a grain and is partially influenced by the local particle arrangement (e.g., particle protrusion and friction angle). Turbulence fluctuations drive sediment motion and are generally approximated using distribution functions in stochastic predictions of particle motion. However, the exact turbulence parameters responsible for motion are still relatively uncertain. Despite the variability in sediment motion between streams, finer sediment is generally easier to move than coarser particles because of the effects of grain weight. Such selective transport of fine sediment is partially responsible for the formation of armor layers in many streams. Armor layers also largely result from a low upstream sediment supply relative to the transport capacity of the flow." @default.
