- W945241921 abstract "This chapter focuses on studies on relationships between nutrient intake and bone gain among adolescent females during ages 12–18. Studies show that peak velocity for bone gain occurs between the ages of 12 and 14, whereas peak height velocity occurs at age 11. The question of what is an adequate amount of calcium intake to support skeletal growth during adolescence and achievement of peak bone mass remains largely unanswered. Nutrient data from typical diets of healthy teenagers collected over the past 6 decades show several secular trends. First, as the society increasingly becomes sedentary, the total caloric intake for teenage women has decreased from about 2300 kcal/day in 1932 to 1700–1800 kcal/day in 1997. Second, with public recognition that high levels of saturated fat in the diet increase cardiovascular disease risk, there has been a reduction of total calories from fat from 42% in 1932 to 30–35% in the diets of teenage women today. During the same time frame there has been a decrease in dairy food consumption by teenagers, resulting in a decreased dietary calcium intake. Two dietary practices, high sodium consumption and a low calcium/protein intake ratio, have been proposed as having a negative impact on bone maintenance or achievement of peak bone density." @default.
