- W94559554 abstract "The subjects of policing, crime, and ethnic minorities have provided a controversial focus within debates about law and order for many years in both Britain and in the United States. Commentators range between those at one end of the spectrum who suggest that Black people are more likely to commit crime than people of other ethnic groups, and those at the other who argue that ‘Black criminality’ is an illusion created by a racist criminal justice system. Despite fundamental disagreements about causes of crime, there is, however, wide consensus that the relationship between the police and many racial minorities has been long characterized by mutual suspicion, mistrust, and, at times, hostility. These problematic relationships have manifested themselves in a number of ways, ranging from lower ratings from ethnic minority people in surveys of public satisfaction with the police, to violent mass confrontation in deprived inner-city areas. This article summarizes some of the main themes arising from research into the nature and causes of problematic relationships between the police and racial minorities. It draws primarily on the British literature, although it also makes some references to U.S. research. While there are important variations between different national contexts, the central question applies almost universally. That is, why is it the case that in many different countries, certain ethnic groups are much more likely than others to be caught up in the criminal justice system? Although some reference has been made to other ethnic minority groups, it is Black people who have been the primary focus of research on ethnicity and policing. The relationships between the police and other minority ethnic groups, such as Hispanic Americans in the United States and South Asians in Britain, show some elements of similarity with the Black experience, but also important areas of difference that can often become submerged within discussions of ‘police–Black’ relations." @default.
