- W945762020 abstract "Publisher Summary Quality control in the clinical chemistry laboratory involves several related activities: (1) preventive measures adopted to minimize variance; (2) assessing the variance of an analytical technique by performing analyses on control material at the same time as on patients' material; (3) statistical analysis of patients' results; and (4) taking part in inter laboratory surveys. Variance means discord and discrepancy in the results of measuring the same quantity on the same material. The steps in many clinical chemistry analyses that contribute to the total variance are conveniently grouped as follows: (1) specimen collection and preparation; (2) sampling of the specimen; (3) the analytical process (e.g., addition of reagents, mixing, temperature control, etc.); (4) measurement (e.g., colorimetric reading); and (5) calculation of results. The chapter also describes preventive measures that should be taken prior to the performance of quality control analysis. The chapter discusses various terminologies of quality control. Various techniques of quality control discussed in the chapter include optimal conditions variance (OCV) and routine conditions variance (RCV).
