- W94621879 abstract "An examination of the handling characteristics of the 2004 Formula SAE car’s suspension geometry was undertaken. Various methods of modeling were examined in the literature view and a model was created using ‘Sim-mechanics’ and ‘Simulink’, which incorporated a ‘magical formula’ tyre model. Using this model the effects of the spool and altering the geometry on the lateral force and yaw moment in a steady state turn were examined. It was found that the car oversteered at higher speeds whilst in lower speed corners the spool introduced moment that moved the car’s handling characteristic closer to understeer. It was also shown that the oversteer that was tuned into the car was the main barrier to increasing the lateral force of the car. Thus it was concluded that the spool is a major disadvantage to the present setup in terms of cornering potential, and that if a differential was used in the car, the car could be tuned to behave predictably at all speeds." @default.
