- W94651410 abstract "Pregnant and lactating women must supply substantial calcium and other minerals to support rapid growth and mineralization of the fetal and neonatal skeletons. Specific adaptations, which differ between pregnancy and lactation, are invoked to meet these mineral requirements. These adaptations alter serum chemistries and calciotropic hormone levels, and occasionally cause maternal hypercalcemia. But more importantly, they also impact the presentation, diagnosis, and management of primary hyperparathyroidism, familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia, hypoparathyroidism, and pseudohypoparathyroidism. Fetal mineral metabolism is regulated differently from the adult, and can be adversely affected by genetic disorders that alter fetal parathyroid function, or by maternal hypercalcemia and hypocalcemia. The onset of breathing and loss of the placental calcium infusion cause the blood calcium to fall after birth, which triggers the neonate to rapidly alter how mineral physiology is regulated. Neonatal mineral homeostasis can be impacted by genetic disorders that disturb parathyroid function, and by lingering effects of in utero exposure to abnormal maternal mineral levels." @default.
