- W947438806 abstract "This chapter reviews the early stage of these events at both cellular and molecular levels to obtain some understanding as to how a blastema of so few cells can give rise to so many cell types. The chapteralso discusses the determination, commitment, and induction of the metanephric mesenchyme (MM) and describes the main transitory and permanent cell types to which the MM gives rise and the fundamental and still unresolved problem of their origin. The MM or blastema is comprises of a few thousands of morphologically similar mesenchymal cells that give rise to whole kidney except the collecting ducts. While there is still no unequivocal lineage data determining the number of precursor (single fate) or stem (multifate) cell populations represented in the blastema, The absence of early lineage markers means that it is still not possible to prove that a single cell within the MM can give rise to both loose stromal cells and dense cap cells that surround ureteric bud tips, a subset of which form the small pretubular aggregates that epithelialize and form nephrons. The chapter attempts to integrate knowledge of the renal lineages and to consider how nephron polarity and segmental specificities are established on the basis of signaling from the duct epithelium and the adjacent dense metanephric mesenchyme that forms a cap around duct tips." @default.
