- W947476089 abstract "The erythrocytes from persons with sickle cell anemia (SS cells) exhibit a wide range of volume and density. The lightest (and largest) of these red cells are the young reticulocytes, with densities similar to normal reticulocytes. A large cell fraction (which may include a variable number of denser SS reticulocytes) has a volume and density similar to that of the majority of normal mature red cells. A variable proportion of SS cells, however, has a density range considerably higher than normal; many of these cells, particularly the most dense, retain an elongated, cigar, or spindle shape even when they are fully oxygenated and contain no polymerized hemoglobin S (Bertles and Dobler, 1969), and have been designated “irreversibly sickled cells” (ISCs). The present chapter is concerned with the mechanisms by which SS cells may become dense." @default.
